What you should know if you're considering dental implants

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that provide a permanent foundation for a fixed replacement tooth. Compared to dentures, bridges and crowns, dental implants are a popular and effective long-term solution for people who are missing teeth, have lost teeth or suffer from chronic dental disease.

As they fit, feel and function like natural teeth, dental implants are fast becoming the new standard for tooth replacement.

But not everyone can use implants, so if you are missing teeth or have an oral pathology that may put your teeth at risk, consult a dentist you trust for proper advice.

In all cases the specialist must evaluate the patient beforehand, since there are certain conditions that the maxillary bone must have to fix implants, if these conditions do not exist, other procedures are necessary before placing these pieces, or evaluating other options.

Dental implants usually consist of three parts:

1)
Implant: a screw that can be used as the root of a new tooth. This is what is permanently attached to your jawbone.

2)
Abutment: This is the support that holds the tooth or group of teeth.

3)
Crown (or denture): The visible part of the tooth. It is usually made of zirconia or porcelain to make it more durable and better looking.

Let's take a look at some FAQs from our patients before getting an implant:

What tests should be performed before making the decision?

Usually, the first thing an expert has to do is perform an imaging test to get a proper view of the bones and verify if the new segment can be properly implanted. In addition, an evaluation of gum's health is performed and mouth's occlusion (bite) is assessed.

Are they visible?

No, implants are not visible. Also, the design of the artificial teeth that are placed looks natural and matches the patient's teeth.

Will they last forever?

Their design and the materials used for their fabrication allow us to assure that implants will last a lifetime, however, this depends on proper care, hygiene and dental control.

If for any reason the implant is not well integrated in the bones and gums, it can move and in this case, it must be removed and then the expert will evaluate if another one may be placed. In all cases, these are treatments that last for many years and new ones are rarely required.

Do implants feel like natural teeth?

Sensation is different from natural teeth, since the implant and the teeth on top are artificial fragments. However, neither the implant nor the new tooth should hurt or bother you.

If you already have implants, always remember to take care of them as if they were your real teeth, this will maintain their functionality, esthetics and at the same time extend their life.

You can use dental implants to replace single teeth, multiple teeth or complete upper and lower dentures.
