What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown, also known as a cap, is an artificial tooth that can be placed over an existing tooth damaged by decay or injury.

Crowns are used to strengthen teeth that have been damaged by periodontal disease, or to improve the appearance of a tooth and completely cover and contain the existing tooth structure, making them highly resistant to fracture.

These are an excellent way of improving your smile if you live with a tooth that’s been weakened but not destroyed due to root canal therapy.

Different Types of Dental Crowns

Crowns may be made of porcelain, gold, or other materials, being porcelain the most common material used for dental crowns.

The type of crown prescribed by your dentist will depend on several factors, including the condition of your tooth and your chewing needs.

Porcelain fused to metal

these are commonly used in conjunction with amalgam restorations. A PFM crown may be used when more conservative treatment is necessary or when more immediate treatment is desired.

Often referred to as “all on four,” or, “tooth in a day,” can be used in cases where patients have been previously treated with implants but require additional tooth rehabilitation due to a variety of reasons including missing teeth (e.g., extraction or periodontal disease), shifting teeth or loose teeth.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia crowns, also known as ceramic crowns or teeth crowns, are an increasingly popular type of restorative dental device.

Zirconia crowns can be placed on nearly any tooth for a natural look and feel. They are made of zirconium oxide ceramics, one of the strongest naturally-occurring materials on the planet.

Zirconia crowns are aesthetically pleasing, strong, resilient and long-lasting.

Gold crowns

Gold crowns are common dental devices that are made for improving the look and health of your teeth. They can be a great solution for people who want to improve their smile.

According to the American Dental Association, gold crowns are one the best options when it comes to this type of cosmetic treatment since gold crowns a great cosmetic and restorative device.

E- MAX: Lithium Disilicate Crowns

E- MAX is a lithium disilicate crown system that has been used for more than four decades, providing an excellent alternative to gold alloys, ceramics, and porcelain.

These new restorative materials are designed to deliver outstanding esthetics, strength, and wear characteristics, as well as provide patients with a truly natural replacement for missing teeth.

The basic E- MAX ceramic is made with a blend of lithium disilicate powders and Siliceous Materials.

How are Dental Crowns placed?

Dental crowns are made up of different materials and they can be placed in different ways such as a big piece or a small piece. Here we’ll talk about how the dentist will place a crown on your tooth. This includes prepping the tooth, replacing any old fillings, and removing any old crowns (if applies).

They are used to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay, cracks or chips. The damaged tooth is removed and a dental crown is made using a process called casting.

Your dentist will then place the crown back over the tooth where it will act like a cap or hat.
